This is beyond amazing. I'm extremely impressed with the progress. I've always been an avid lover of your work, and the fact that you want to take this even further is incredibly impressive.
The realism you strive for will undoubtedly take incredible amounts of time, but your high levels of skill in Ai will make up for it. I think you'll end up going far with this. I'm surprised you haven't been picked up by a sci-fi design studio at this rate.

Vision: Five Stars Your vision for this and your drive to go above and beyond to make this incredibly believable earns a solid five.
Originality: Five Stars As usual, the ships you create are based on real theories (mostly) but you always come up with something original for your designs.
Technique: Five Stars Your vector work makes me jealous of your abilities. That's hard to do, considering that I have a fair amount of vector knowledge.
Impact: Four Stars This work inspired me to get back to work in vectors instead of shying away like a little b*tch. Your drive inspired me to drive myself more. If that's not impact, I don't know what is. Will give a final 5th star when the ship is complete. (or rather, I'll try to give the fifth star with my head missing after my mind is blown).
Overall, 4.75/5. Excellent work. I'm hard to truly impress, and you've done it. with just a WIP.
I mean, this just keeps getting better and better. I know you're still working on this masterpeice, but I can already tell it's going to hit a home run and above.
The detail being put into this piece is just a show of your vision and plan for the starships look and feel and the detail continues to add more and more lore into the artwork itself.
I know you stick with Illustrator for now, but I know when you finally begin 3d work and you go for this level of detail and above and when you render those shots, very few people will be able to tell the difference.
Keep up the great work man, we're glad you're home safe and being able to continue doing what you do best.

Out of random curiosity How did you make those lights? I'm having "issues" finding how to do it in the new illustrator. (Last time I used Illustrator was when CS debuted back in 2001, and it was not as functional then). I imported a custom made one in Ps, but I'd like to just create it all in Ai.
(1)Got to illustrator and select Window->Swatch Libraries->Gradients->Fades (2)Select a White Fade (3)Draw A Box with white fade fill (4)Edit gradient to have a light yellow primary color to a darker color fade (might need to match it with the primary hull color or the background color depending on where you're using it) (5)Use an appropriate fade - this allows the background detail to peak through* (6)Apply a Gaussian blur that gives the lighting enough of a bleed to make it feel realistic*
*Both of these are highly subjective and will require you to tweak and toy till you are satisfied.
In terms of cost, I imagine the ship would cost comprable to about 100-120 Nimitz Class Carriers so around 540 billion dollars a unit if you look at mass of the ship alone versus that of the Nimitz. So in all the class would run around 270 trillion dollars. Mind you, you have to keep this in perspective. You are looking at a star nation who spans 250 worlds with a vast vast interstellar economy so that's actually pretty reasonable when you take into account. Case in point:
Consider that the U.S. with a population of 7 billion has a world GDP of 80 billion. The alliance has 1.342 trillion people spread over 350 worlds. That makes for a population density of about 4 billion per world. Now assuming that plays into a ratio with our world, that means the GDP of each world is averages to 45 trillion meaning the GDP of the entire Alliance is around 15,840 trillion (or 15.8 quintillion). Now if we look at the cost of the entire Renown Class at 270 trillion dollars, then the entire class would only represent 1.7% of the GDP of the Alliance for a single year. That being said, the entire fleet would not be built in one year. Assuming 10% of the fleet is built each year (which would still be 50 hulls!) then the Renown-class would represent .17% of the Alliance's GDP. Given that the United States spends about 4.7% of its GDP on the military, that means the Alliance would have a military budget of 750 trillion dollars. As such, the entire Renown-class production (at 10% a year) would represent 3.6% of the total military budget and about 7.2% of the naval budget for a year (assuming the navy gets about 50%). Pretty reasonable in my humble opinion.
As for crew size, I imagine about 4,000-5,000 personnel in just crew. Probably about 2x that for marines/ground troops.
The realism you strive for will undoubtedly take incredible amounts of time, but your high levels of skill in Ai will make up for it. I think you'll end up going far with this. I'm surprised you haven't been picked up by a sci-fi design studio at this rate.
