The 4 stripes represent the 4 key elements of the government, the President (outermost stripe), the Judiciary (the second outermost stripe) and the two houses of the legislature (the Senate and the Council of Lords - the two broken stripes).
The olive branches are a carry over from the UN flag (which served both the first and second UN), representing a new era of peace and cooperation. The two octagon rings represent the original sixteen member nations (13 star systems with sol having 3 member worlds and Centauri having 2 member worlds).
The eight pointed stars represent the 8 cardinal directions in interstellar travel (Galactic North, Galactic North East, Galactic East, etc. - relative to the core of the galaxy with the perpendicular being a line through the galactic core through earth referred to as the "Terran Line"
Nice, as one who has worked with symbols as well I can see the distinctions. The octagonal shape stands out and the specific number of stars for the worlds were great choices. This is exactly how flags are made ^___^
well as with other comments, you have to realize that the federation took that from the UN. This is just like the UN flag and quite simply there are some very big distinctions between this flag and the federation one. First off, I didn't just photocopy the UN flag and stick some stars in the center, I did something original and thought about things behind it. Everything on that flag has a purpose. ::shrugs;: I guess there will always be some similarity when you are drawing from the same source.
I Like it. And while the seal reminds me of the UFP Seal, it's not a big deal since both had a source in the UN Seal. So any plans to see a "Naval Jack"?
